Pure Academy Classes - Why and How?

Students fail classes and need to make them up, the master schedule goes awry, counselors don’t understand why academy courses need to be pure, students want and should be encouraged to take AP courses while part of an academy – given all these constraints how do you keep academy courses pure in each grade-level and why does it matter? This session will provide examples of strategies schools and districts are utilizing to ensure pure academy cohorts by grade-level including innovative credit recovery programs, standards-based grading, communication with counselors, embedded and/or AP support and coding classes in the master schedule.

This presentation was prepared for the National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC) Annual Conference, 2013.
